I spent 3 months in Dar es Salaam as a volunteer for help2kids. To me this was a great experience. I mostly enjoyed planning and executing projects and English lessons for the kids at the children’s home. After working there for only a short time, you truly fall in love with the kids. They are so happy, open and curious which I think is impressive due to their past. It was very rewarding for me to work with them because I could feel that my presence there was appreciated. I think the organization’s work is useful and sustainable as the focus is on English and IT – extremely important skills nowadays. I also taught those two subjects at the partner Wamato School. It was quite challenging because the schools there are not at all comparable to ours and you progress very slowly. Sometimes that’s frustrating but all in all you’re still making a difference. I stayed at the Friendly Gecko Guesthouse. It is a lovely place where I immediately felt at home. All the services are provided and the dinner is delicious. I loved hanging out on the balcony in the evenings for a chat with the other volunteers. I really enjoyed their company through my whole stay. We did many things together in Dar and also traveled to some other places like Moshi, Mikumi (Safari), Zanzibar and Bagamoyo. Also the managers from the guesthouse and from the organization and I got on well and they did a great job in organizing everything. I would definitely recommend volunteering with help2kids, it gives you a good insight into the African lifestyle and it is a great opportunity to show that you care about those who did not get as much as you. |
